Went to KL and Seremban for a short trip last month. We arrived at the Larkin bus terminal around 2:30pm on that day, and bought tickets for the 3pm bus to KL. However, the bus didn’t take off until almost 4:45pm!! It seems that there were too few people on the bus so they keep delaying while trying to get more people to get on the bus… They even pretend to count the number of people on the bus and took our tickets so that we cannot get off the bus or get refund! How ridiculous…. I drew the bus terminal building and the bus next to us while waiting…

We went late and only managed to sketch the church right outside the mrt station.. as we missed the morning briefing, we didn’t know they changed the show-and-tell location to the community center until Pat came to get his car and kindly offered us a ride to the CC! We did another sketch outside block 47 after show-and-tell before heading home…

It was a 2-day event organized by the Bangkok sketchers as part of the community festival that celebrate a heredity area next to the Chao Phraya River. I am impressed by the hospitality and the organization of the BKK sketchers. I enjoyed the experience very much and would sure be back to BKK!

Little India is such a colorful place to sketch, and you won’t run out of topics! Last Sat, I joined another sketching session at Buffalo Road, Little India organized by Master Chan Chang How. It was another fruitful session, Master Chan showed me how to sketch people, he was really fast and his sketch captured the motion and the form so nicely! The two persons in the sketch in the middle were done by Master Chan, I added them to my sketch with Photoshop :P He also showed me how to sketch the leaves in the drawing on the right, and helped me to add some darker parts to the drawing so that it’ll pop.

Last weekend, I joined Master Chan Chang How and the USKSG group to sketch along South Bridge Road around Chinatown. Master Chan is one of the most excellent watercolor painters in Singapore, and it was a very valuable experience to sketch with him. He is a very warm and generous person, volunteer to organize a sketching session like this to share his knowledge in sketching and painting. It was really helpful to see him demonstrate how our sketches could be improved. A very inspiring session indeed.

Waterfront is always one of my favorite hang out place, from HK’s Victoria Harbour to TO’s Ontario Lake, and now SG’s Singapore River. It is always so calming an relaxing to sit and enjoy the view there. Last week, after having lunch at Boat Quay, I walked across the bridge to join other sketchers around the Asian Civilisations Museum to sketch. I sat outside this IndoChine restaurant, which is located at one wing of the ACM. I think there was a banquet or function going on, as I kept hearing musics and people singing while I sketch.

Almost every building is so sketch-able I didn’t know where to start! I ended up at the junction of Duxton Hill and Duxton Road where there are some tree shades, and I decided to sketch this little shop across the road. It just stand out from others – the color, the flag and the sign board – looks like a cute store. It was only much later that I found this is a bookstore called ‘Littered with books’, and many sketchers had sketched it too. I should pay it a visit next time I’m around there.

It started raining once we stepped out of Loy Kee, the chicken rice restaurant. Once we arrived at our first location, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, it started pouring. The Memorial Hall is now a museum, and I ended up spending more than an hour inside the museum before I started sketching.

I’ve also contributed a small sketchbook, 2 small sketches, and a collaborative drawing for the exhibition. If you are in SG, please drop by the URA center and check it out! The exhibition last until 24 Dec 2011.

I had a wonderful time sketching with the Singapore Urban Sketchers at Club Street for the monthly sketch-walk last weekend. Instead of sketching on our own, we were challenged to collaborate with other sketchers on a panoramic sketch of Club Street. I teamed up with a new friend, Chao, and did the following piece. I didn’t think much about it when I started, luckily Chao did some magic and put the drawing into the right perspective and some nice composition. I then went back to Club Street on Monday morning to finish off the last part of the sketch. It was a good learning experience and I really enjoyed sketching with others!

We first did some thumbnail sketches, then we were given an hour to go back to one of the thumbnail locations to paint a larger piece. I liked the idea of thumbnail sketches and the multiple sharing sessions that we had, there were more interactions among the participants for sure.

July’s sketchwalk was around the City Hall MRT area. This time it was a whole day event, but I only managed to join the afternoon session. The first stop after having lunch at the Funan was the Central Fire Station. It is definitely one of the most challenging buildings I’ve drawn. I got caught in the details and spent more than an hour to draw just one tower of the building…

We need to pick up a guest at the Woodlands train station two weeks ago so we went there for the first time, but it was a horrible experience. First, we waited more than 30 minutes for the bus. Then, we got caught in a traffic jam and the bus moved very slowly, it took us more than 75 minutes to get to Woodlands. The worst part is, we did not get off the bus at the right station because a lot of people got on the bus at Kranji and totally blocked our view/way. Before we knew, we were already at the Immigration Tower where we were asked to show our passports! Of course we did not have passports with us, as we had no intention of going across the border and just want to go to the train station. But there is no way out from there, and we had to ask the security guard/immigration officer for help. Finally, we had to hand in our IDs to the officers there, and wait for an armed guard/officer to escort us through the tower. We waited for around 30 minutes before an officer came. We were then took to a room where we had to wait again for our IDs to be checked. I cannot believe what we had gone through! It was well passed 7pm when we finally get to the train station, when we were supposed to be there at 5:30. We decided to take a cab back after picking up our guest, and it only took us around 25 min to be back in town.

Nando is famous for its peri-peri chicken. We were at their Bugis store a few times and quite like their food. This time, we tried the one at PlazaSingapura. For some reasons, the foods don’t seem to be as good. I also ordered a ‘refreshing mint’ drink, and it was SO sour – I can hardly taste the mint but lime juice. I guess we should just go back to Bugis next time.

Bukit Timah Plaza is a pretty old shopping complex, but you can find all kinds of stores there. My friend took me there for Laksa last time. This time, it already passed lunch time when I arrived, and all the laksa and prawn noodles were sold out. I ordered a cup of ‘hot tea’, which is actually milk tea, so that I can sit down and sketch. While sketching, I overheard the ladies in front saying that this place has very nice Nonya desserts too.

We went to Orchard Road on Sunday and it was SO SO SO crowded. There was even a big crowd at the entrance of an underpass and people need to line up to get in! It’s that crazy! ! It was about dinner time when we were at Takashimaya, so we went to the food court to look for food. Needless to say, there were lineups everywhere and no free table at the food court at all. We decided to go somewhere for dinner, and we found this little cafe called PiqueNique on our way out. It has some interesting decorations – large tins of milk bottles were hanging on the walls. We were seated at the middle of a long table as this is the only available spot left, and there was a cute glass bottle on the table, with a paper tag in it. The letters ‘LTM’ were printed on the tag. I drew these sketches while waiting for my food – ‘big breakfast cheese burgers with fries’, which costs $12 before tax/service charge.

It was a very hot day last sunday. Everyone’s out sketching already when I finally arrived at the White Canvas Gallery. It was so hot that I decided to stay inside the gallery and check out the exhibition first. There were so many lovely sketches. After cooling down, I went outside to look for other sketchers, and found Tia being surrounded by a bunch of people. I joined them and watched Tia starting on her second sketch. It was so inspiring to watch an artist work. I thought I was just gonna watch, but then decided to get my sketchbook out and start drawing too. I managed to finish two sketches. Colors were added at home later.

Joined USK Singapore for the Little India sketchwalk. We arrived late, as usual; but this time we couldn’t see sketchers everywhere. We tried to find the group but I guess Little India is actually not that ‘little’, we had no idea where did everyone go. After wandering around for a while, I decided to stay at the Little India Arcade to sketch as it started raining. Only managed to do two sketches, one was the flower shops on the Campbell Lane, and the other was a corner shop at the Little India Arcade. There were so much to see there, and everything is so colorful – the houses, the shops, the street, the people. I should go back to sketch more later. Added the colors later at home, and scanned the sketches with my brand new scanner – yummy colors!

I went to Lamma Island with a few friends on the 11th April for a hiking/sketching/photo trip. We had brunch at the ‘Bookworm cafe’ first..then we hiked to the Lamma Winds – a wind turbine in Tai Ling, Lamma Island… we spent some time taking photos there.. after that, we went to the beach and just sat there and sketched till it’s about time to go home…it’s the first time we went sketchcrawl… and it’s fun :) i did 20 sketches…
